Carbon capture trial hailed a success

Retrieved from ABC News Online:

A $10-million carbon capture and storage trial has been completed in the Otways.

The CO2 Cooperative Research Centre is testing storing carbon in rock underground near Nirranda.

The chief executive, Richard Aldous says the trial has shown that carbon [dioxide] produced from burning coal can safely be stored.

"Our first project, where we stored 60,000 tonnes of CO2 underground, allowed us to demonstrate that CO2 can be safely stored underground," he said.

"But it also allowed us and our scientists to monitor very closely, precisely how it was happening, how it was interacting with the rocks."

Doesn't this just show that perhaps there are better alternatives around that will get the same reduction in emissions(5%) as Gillard's Carbon Dioxide Tax.

Carbon Dioxide and the Politics of the Carbon Tax

I was just sent this document from a friend that was originally published on the Menzies House website (written by: Andy Semple B.App.Sc., B.Com - Twitter: @Bulmkt) that is a great fact sheet exposing a variety of myths about Climate Change and the Carbon Dioxide Tax.

Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide (CO2) makes up about 0.0385% of the Earth‟s Atmosphere or 385ppm. CO2 is a tasteless, odourless, invisible and incombustible gas – all animals including humans exhale it.

97% of Earth's annual production of Carbon Dioxide is almost entirely produced by Nature. Human industry and transport produces the remaining 3% (Table 3 on page 6).

Australian industry contributes only 1.5% of that remaining 3% or 0.0000173% of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide or measly 0.173ppm.

Joanne Nova on The 2011 Lord Monckton Tour

I saw her in person at the event and the presentation was so amazing (hope it was as good on the video!). It's definitely worth the time it takes to watch!!

Introduction by The Hon. Dr Peter PHELPS, MLC

Joanne Nova has been explaining science as a professional speaker,
TV host, radio presenter, and book author for over a decade. Joanne
has performed in town halls, five star hotels, schools, outback
communities, and in a House briefing room in Washington. Her clients
include professional associations of accountants, doctors, engineers,
financial planners, and teachers.

The Skeptics Handbook

I came across this excellent book written & published by Joanne Nova.

The Skeptics Handbook is officially launched. It’s been quietly circulating by word of mouth since late July 2008 when it was sent to a few key Australian politicians, and the producers of 60 minutes.

The Handbook gives policy makers a strategy to cut through the endless irrelevant details of the debate. There are many points where the science of Global Warming is open to challenge (that’s how science works), but debating each one becomes an endless path of swapping tit for tat detail. If you enjoy that kind of stimulating discussion, go for it, but that’s not what this is about.

I want to lift the debate above the mud-slinging, pathetic ad hominem attacks, and specious argument by authority. The basic rules of logic and reasoning have been known since the Greeks. Educated adults ought to do better. Maybe one day, national curriculums will too.

As a delegate to the UNFCCC conference in Bali 2007 it was obvious that skeptics need to be organized. The problem was not a lack of material, but rather too much to choose from. The handbook focuses on the only points that matter. Less is more.

Joanne was a former Australian Greens member & has 15 years of experience in explaining science as a professional speaker, TV host, radio presenter and book author. She has explained on her website: "Obviously if someone can produce empirical evidence that adding extra carbon dioxide, above current atmospheric concentrations, measurably affects our climate, I’m all ears; I’ll update the handbook and change my mind."

Her website is well worth a look for anyone interested in climate science, etc. www.joannenova.com.au

Why the Global Warming Agenda is wrong

I was just sent this video from a friend and thought that it was definitely worth sharing!

The video touches on a variety of topics and questions about Climate Change that have never been answered by the Warmists. In this video, Roy W. Spencer, former NASA climatologist and climate expert debunks the global warming agenda. I would highly recommend that you watch this video and also send it around to all your friends!

Manipulated Statistics: Is Australia really a big emitter of CO2?

This question is one that is often confusing and gets mixed responses from politicians of both sides.

Advocates of Climate Change and/or the Government's Carbon Tax often quote the Garnaut Review (2011) as stating:

Australia, Canada and the United States have the highest emissions per person of the developed world.

This allows them to claim: We need a Carbon Tax now - We can't afford to be left behind?

Should we really be measuring Carbon Emissions per capita (per person)? This is a key question against the validity of their argument / statistics and unfortunately is never asked, nor answered.

I disagree. I don't think that we should make conclusions such as "Australia is one of the largest emitters" as this statement does not require taking into consideration the population of any particular country. The only way per capita statistics should be used is when determining the efficiency of a country's carbon emissions ie. how much they use to satisfy the population's demands.

So is Australia really a big emitter of CO2?

Let's now take into consideration the Populations of the various different countries.

  • Australia: 22,600,000 (World Rank: #50)
  • USA: 311,630,000 (World Rank: #3)
  • China: 1,339,724,852 (World Rank: #1)

Obviously, by a 'per capita' rating, Australia must have more emissions than China, and the USA, because they have substantially more people over which to spread their emissions. This is palpably, an unfair comparison mechanism.
